Harnessing the Power of Goals

Too often, I have seen hard-working chiropractors and other doctors struggle, even after years in practice.

Well beyond the start-up phase of building their practice, their growth plateaus and then roller-coasters, up and down, never hitting their full potential consistently. Employees come and go. The practice takes 5 steps forward, then 4 back. Over and over.

I call this being trapped, mostly unknowingly, in a Personality-Driven Practice.

This is the model when you begin your practice. Everything is dependent upon you. It is you versus the world. And if you are determined, this works well enough to get your fledgling practice off the ground.

You start winning, and you have the feeling of being a champion! And rightfully deserved, you are! At least for a while.

But since you are also the doctor, the clinic director, the manager, the HR director, the marketing director, the computer guy, and 20 other roles, it is hard to gain much altitude after taking off.

Your solution? Work harder!

Go to another seminar. Get inspired. Get “dipped.” Maybe buy more therapy equipment!

Sometimes these help, at least for the short term.

But it is hard to break out of this gerbil wheel. Growing your business worked once, at least to get things going. But now, you’re trapped. You can’t find the traction. You can’t grow or take more time off because everything hinges on you.

MAKING THE SHIFT FROM PERSONALITY-DRIVEN CHIROPRACTIC PRACTICE TO GOAL DRIVEN BUSINESS

Imagine a business that is systematized and where the team is driven by their shared goals. The business runs with less of your effort, like a flywheel that now spins with just a little push.

This is what we call a Goal Driven Business, which you should have after 4-6 years in practice. Unfortunately, most doctors get stuck in the hero role of the entrepreneur who still needs to command the daily operation.

The first step is to define your goals.

Start by writing a paragraph or two about your philosophy related to business and what you do as a doctor.

Then, distill a few values that represent this philosophy. They would have to be meaningful. Heartfelt. For example, thinking of my kids, a value might be: “Communication. Always seek to understand first, then get understood.”

Come up with 5-8. Then tell your team your philosophy and ask them to come up with a few values that closely relate to your philosophy but also coincide with theirs.

Then, get together with your team and come up with mutually agreed upon values and a purpose for your business.

These would be your goals, your standards, and your values.

This would be the start of creating our Goal Driven systematized chiropractic business (that is more profitable and fun!)

WHY DO THIS?

Lots of reasons, but according to research done by Gallup in 2023, organizations with clearly defined, employee-embraced values see 73% higher employee engagement than those without. This translates to 23% higher profitability, 66% lower employee turnover, and 31% lower absenteeism.

We cover this on our Practice MBA program.

You are a hero, no doubt about it. You are an independent business owner or working with one.

You are also pretty gutsy in that you are part of a rebel industry that fights for better health in the face of huge, vested interests.

My folks each had their own businesses back in the last Century. They were my heroes. Independent business owners make America, America. And I respect you and your profession for the true health care you courageously and compassionately deliver.

That is why I am so adamant about helping offices like yours become Goal Driven Businesses, driven by teams with shared values, so that you, your team, patients, and community, continue winning.

Seize the Future
